Linux Mint 3.1 Review

Great Vision, Great prospects, but losing some it somewhere in the crowd.
Mint Linux is a buntu derivative. According to the project website; "Linux Mint's purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution". Mint Linux is currently ranked #6, on distrowatch. Celena (codename for Linux Mint 3.1) boasts about mintAssistant, mintUpload, proprietary drivers, plug-ins, stability, performance and usability.

Test Machine
My workstation is a dual core 3.4 GHz intel processor, with 4 Gig RAM and 512 MB Nvidia 7950 graphics card. I have a 19" wide screen monitors which supports 1440x900@75Hz.

Booting
Like Ubuntu, mint offers a live CD environment where you can see how the distribution works on your computer before actually installing it. On my machine live CD booted at 1280x1024@60Hz instead of native 1440x900@75Hz. The live CD environment seemed too slow to me. The new artwork introduced with Celena was with black theme and looked nice.

One point I would like to mention is about the drivers. Mint boasts about proprietary drivers but nvidia graphics drivers are missing from the selection. Module nv was configured for my nvidia graphics card and thus native 3D support was missing. I tried to manually change the driver in xorg.conf, but xorg refused to start because nvidia module was not installed. Finally I have to manually install proprietary drivers for nvidia. This is somethings that needs to be looked at by the distribution developers

Installation
The installer is the same 6 step installer used by Ubuntu. And I personally feel that the installer is bloatted and does unnecessary operation that seem to make you feel that your computer is slow and outdated. But this is rant is directed to Ubuntu instead of Mint.

The installation process is fast took around 15 minutes to finish and comparatively fast. On first boot user is shown mintAssistant.

I was really exited about it but was greatly disappointed . The number of configurations for a new machine are enormous but only three options are provided by mintAssistant, namely root password, disk configuration and fortune. I feel that all these options are extremely irrelevant. sudo is far better, nobody cares how the disks are managed (as long as they see the contents) and fortune is stress reliever.

Aesthetics
I really liked the earlier blue theme found in Mint. But now with new black wallpaper and green logo, I feel really bad about the looks. Its good to stick to two colors at max, otherwise the theme feels disconnected.

Applications
The first thing to notice is custom application launcher. The launcher is well organized and easy to use.

Being a single CD installation distribution, the application set is limited and oriented to a desktop user. Tomboy notes is a noticeable addition to Accessories. Gimp is present for image manipulation. The latest version of firefox, thunderbird, sunbird, pidgin, java runtime are installed by default. Open Office version installed is the outdated 2.2.0. instead of 2.2.1 or latest 2.3.0.

Multimedia I was able to watch videos, DVDs. and listen to music.

Eye Candy
Both Beryl and Compiz are installed be default, leading for more confusion for a novice. come on guys even beryl and compiz agreed to merge back why are we still having them differently in Mint?

The default configuration for xorg crashes beryl and you have to manually edit xorg.conf to add special parameters in order to make beryl work. I think it will be long time before we actually see a distribution with runs beryl/compiz out of box.

Recommendations
Version 3.1 is supposed to be minor update over 3.0, but even the kernel remains the same. With gibbon around the corner users would have been more happy with a new version based on gutsy. The changes made in Celena do no warrant a new version. Why does mint need to frequent releases? Have a better release plan for Mint. Mint needs more focused efforts.

Conclusion
I have to admit that Mint is one of the most beginner friendly distribution out there. It is the only distribution that I installed on my dad's machine and he is really happy with it.

But with the current release I feel that Mint is getting derailed. It is emphasizing on frivolous decorations instead on usability. Mint has a great vision and have fulfilled it so far; it reached the distrowatch top ten. It just need to make sure that good work continues.

mint doesn't say anything about including propietary drivers.

If you want to install them, just use the great included tool Envy (System Tools-Envy)

And yes, one of the goals of mint is to look nice.

Glad to hear that your dad like it.

Did you read the release notes? http://www.linuxmint.com/celena.html Among the 7 major improvements coming with Celena you only covered 2 (artwork and mintassistant). This is not a review, barely an overview.

Anonymous said...

Aweseome! Yet another garbage review to add to the ever growing dungheap pile these days. Whats with the latest spate of barely educated, self proclaimed linux distro reviewers? Reviews like these serve to help nobody, because even someone who is looking for a critical review would immediately skip to the next website after reading the first barely coherent paragraph! However, for posterities sake, Ill give this reviewer some hints:

1. Learn to read/write proper English if your going to write a review in that language. The aweful grammar used here actually makes this more of a "how NOT to write a review blog" than anything else.

2. Actually TEST the distro you are reviewing! Understand it intimately. Please look that last word up, if your not familiar with it (and I doubt you are). It means that you should have been a core part of the beta testing team from the very beginning, have tested every last detail of the OS, done interviews with the Developers, carefully read the forums to scan for key user comments/reactions, camped out in Mint's IRC for a while, read all the wiki's/docs, etc. etc.. Yet, it is obvious you did none of that. You dont even know that there is a tool called Envy that comes with Mint, let alone anything more... Do you know what Xorg.conf is?.. Do you know anything about Linux beyond, "Hey look at all the pretty colors!!"?

I thought the review wasn't all that bad. I never listen to the uneducated who don't have the "clusters" to sign a review as Anonymous.

Before you criticize, step up, or get stepped on!

Aceman. First, I would not write a review without following the steps I outlined above for how to write a proper review. Doing anything less is a major disservice to both the distro developers and those who call themselves loyal users of it. Second, if I did write a review, I would gladly receive, and take note of, any feedback I got to help me with the next one, or to at least correct problems with the current one. To not do so disrespects those who took the time to write the comments/suggestions. In truth, it is a garbage review. There is almost nothing accurate or constructive about it as regards Linux Mint. The "recommendations" the reviewer gives, are total nonsense because he recommends things that are already implemented in Mint, showing the fact that the reviewer knows nothing at all about what hes reviewing!

IRT me posting as Anonymous. Would you prefer I post as the PinkSpottedElephant?.. Or how about Acemanisclueless?.. Does it really make any difference what nick I post as in the end? Take my post for its content and not for the nick I post under.

I thought this review was pretty shallow and trivial, actually. It won't be very helpful to most people looking to learn anything really useful. You completely ignored the most significant change in this version. To quote from Mint's own page:

The Update Manager and Update Notifier were removed from Celena so users would not perform un-educated upgrades. With more than 2 releases a year and many modules affected by upgrades, stability was preferred to security in Celena. No more pop-ups telling you a new version of Ubuntu became available, no more pop-ups telling you to download the latest kernel... your system is stable, tested and it should stay that way.

The entire thing can be viewed here = http://linuxmint.com/celena.html .

If you don't think that's an important change to note, then I question your criteria for review. Why read, or write, something that misses the main points so badly?

To all the distro fanboys, who waste there time posting flaming comments on other's blog, I would like to say, please conserve your energy and help make your distro better!

Actions speak louder than words, I still remember latest Mint KDE release which refused to install on manual partitioning mode. It was blamed on KDE ubiquity frontend. But hey Kubuntu never had that problem!

The review points out some serious issues with the current release. How many distros you have seen using more than two colors? I didn't know that fortune configuration was worthy of an Assistant. And seriously how many people think that more than 2 releases per year, is pragmatic?

TRANSLATION: Don't leave a comment about this review unless you want to praise it!

Seriously, constructive criticism is always welcome. What's frustrating is when a self-proclaimed reviewer a) clearly hasn't read the OS release notes properly, and b) does the most superficial skimming of a system try before reviewing. The result is you get people pointing out your inaccuracies in the comments section, which is never fun for a reviewer. Check your facts ahead of time.

Also, you might also consider having someone proofread your English before posting. Just a thought.

I once wrote a distro review (a few months ago) that actually made it to Distrowatch and Tuxmachines. I had offers to write more for at least a little pay, because the review was well received. Reading cruft like this makes me wonder why I never pursued this further...

Also, your test box has insanely high specs. Try testing distros on something more "middle-of-the-road" or even low-spec in the future, because most Linux users are running something much older and/or slower.

I suspect there is a native language issue at work here in this review...I would hate to think this is a review from someone for whom English is a "first" language. That being said, as a relative newcomer to Linux, I would have to say the review was somewhat less than helpful. As noted by others, it's certainly not a particularly accurate review. It does sound like someone with an axe to grind. I've found Mint Linux and PClinuxOS to be the best distros for "newbies" like myself, unless you count Xandros or Mandriva in the mix, and I personally don't care for either, even if the cost involved was a non-issue.
What I find appealing about Mint Linux is the inclusion of programs necessary to access video and audio content out of the box, a simple install, and appealing GUI. Rather than a drawback of Mint Linux, I consider their frequent "upgrades" of the Distro as a very aggressive attempt to get the Distro "right". Consequently, I give the folks working on it Kudos!

I think the reviewer came much closer to the "truth" about the latest version of Mint Linux by describing his father's reaction to it. Does "Celena"have everything right? Of course not!(For one thing, I prefer KDE)
However, I've seen every indication that the folks working on it will continue refining it until they do, in fact, "get it right".

Ditto!
LOL...

i agree with most of what the reviewer says, beryl needs an edit of xorg.conf to make it work, the mintinstall is semi-pointless in its current state, and i disagreed with the removal of update notifier.

Sudo sucks however, so insecure and frankly a pain in the ass compared to root console.

Apart from that mint 3.1 is pretty much identical to before and works good, though i've personally switched to mepis recently.

And people should learn to be civil when making their points, lest people ignore their rants because they sound like an asshole, like an earlier poster.

I like Linux Mint 3.1
I found it refreshing
I ran thru all the distro's I had
and my best friend who know's nothing
at all about Linux one distro over
another....picked out Mint 3.1
as the distro he wanted me to install
on his newly aquired Laptop.
Every single thing worked on it
the winmodem, his wireless, even his
winhpprinter....all worked with very
little effort on my part.

He's fabulously happy with it
and I think it looks great..

Keep up the great work I say

I tried to load it... and it just plain died after a couple of tries. It was a fresh install, wiping out the hard drive. Ubuntu and all of its own derivatives, Xandros, and others all loaded just fine on my test computer.

I agree. The review is not very good, but...

"1. Learn to read/write proper English if your going to write a review in that language. The aweful grammar used here actually makes this more of a "how NOT to write a review blog" than anything else."

aweful ??

you are = you're NOT your

Don't rip on the guy's bad English with worse English!!!

Anonymous said...

That's right! let all the non native English speakers know (or is that no?) that you will accept nothing less than perfect English when trying to communicate with you in said language (English). How many of you English speakers are FLUENT in another language? that's right just about all I guess. Aren't economics a bitch?!
This sad ass world needs a do over!
